What is your opinion on an employer taking photos of staff to be placed on the companies website, are releases needed in this case?

Most of the time, employment contracts already have clauses that permit this, so there's no need for a release. If there is no clause in the employment contract, there are already many rights of use in existing laws OR legal precedents that allow it as well. The only time use of employee images might fall outside of those protections is if the images are used to promote a product or service in a way that is clearly more consistent with other advertising that the company is doing than that of general corporate representations.
