Using a flash in in long exposures helps freeze important parts of the scene, while the slow shutter speed elangates moving elements, accentuating the implied motion. Here, an eight second exposure at f3.5 (@ 28mm) on Fuji Provia 100F captures the lights from the passing street lamps and cars on the Malecón in Cuba. The flash burst imprints the foreground in the frame (because flashes are often limited to about ten feet). Even if other light happened to be imprinted on the film at the same time, chances are more likely that the burst portion will be more prominent.
