I love crescent moons because of photos like this. I actually didn't know I could take it, since it was so dark and I had no tripod. I had a 70-200mm f2.8 lens, but it was still so dark that the shortest exposure I could handhold was 1/60 second. Longer than that, and hand-shake would have been disasterous with the lens extended all the way to 200. It just so happened that the moon metered exactly at this level. Initially, I was disappointed in the shot because I got none of the details in the foreground rock formations that caught my attention in the first place. But since then, I've learned the valuable aesthetic of the silhouette, as this has since become one of my favorite moon pictures.
