"Here I am", and "Please don't kill me." Graphic anti-abortion poster
ylw-text.gif
abortion-poster.jpg
ylw-text.gif This poster graphically describes the development of the fetus and how any form of abortion is the most offensive form of murder. Such propaganda is not common in Cuba, and is only allowed in churches, so such messages are rarely seen. Nevertheless, abortion is rare in Cuba due to the promotion of other prevention techniques, such as the use of condoms and birth control pills. Some say that abortion rates in Cuba are high, but trying to establish the reality is difficult, since there are no independent/international entities that can establish anything as "truth" at this point. It is well-known that organizations that oppose abortion often inflate data to support their causes. But, sociologists universally cite countries that have open access to birth control have lower incidents of abortions, and the rate goes even lower when birth control is free. We can point to a lot of other countries where data can be collected and verified to show this association to be true. There is also a very aggressive PR campaign in cuba for use of condoms and other health-related behaviors because of their fear of aids. All these in combination have reduced the number of unwanted pregnancies as well. Since there are no stigmas associated with abortion there, and because it's a free procedure, people are not uncomfortable talking about it, and doctors seem to indicate (informally) the lower rate in general due to the factors noted above. So, while there is no direct, authorotative and reliable source of accurate information, the indirect information is all we can go on.
