Ché was Fidel Castro's comerade in arms, his partner in the revolution against Batista, the president of the then-democratic (and capitalist) regime that ruled Cuba until 1960. Ché was attractive and romantic, and was purported to have great charisma. Conflicting reports of how Ché died range from his being "lost" somewhere in Costa Rica, to a direct assassination under Castro's orders, who feared Ché's political potential. (It's hard to find those who don't believe the latter story to be true.)

Images of Ché are everywhere throughout Cuba, as are quotes and other reminders of him. His image has symbolized the revolution, despite Castro, who has been more directly responsible for Cuba's state of affairs. Ironically, Castro does not allow his image to be used in propaganda for the revolution or the nation itself.
