Shooting lighting can obviously be dangerous if you're standing out in the rain, so be a coward. Here, I parked my car on the Sausalito shore facing downtown San Francisco, mounted my camera on a tripod, attached a cable release with a built-in timer, and hid in my car during the exposures. I set the timer for 7 minutes, the aperture to f5.6, and screwed on a FL-D filter to my 28-135mm (@135mm) to compensate for the greenish reciprocity failure that Velvia (ISO 50) can produce at longer exposures. This also helps with the green tint from the flourescent lights in the office buildings. Lightning always comes out purple on film anyway, but the FL-D doesn't really affect that.
