In May, 2001, I went on Wilderness Travel's
Andes to the Amazon trip (click
here
for itinerary).
This amazing adventure explores Bolivia's fascinating culture and landscape
starting in La Paz, Bolivia's capital. Socked away at 12,000 feet,
La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. While it isn't as cold as one
might expect for such altitude, the city still seems to produce some
of the best frozen yogurt in South America. Bowler-hatted Quechua and
Aymara people add a cultural and social twist with an aw-shucks
whimsynot to mention great photo opportunities. Nearby is the highest
navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, which has the infamous "reed
islands", the man-made floating islands made out of the lake's weeds.
People live on these islands, raise animals, go to school, and even sell
trinkets to tourists. Set against the landscape of the Andes Mountain
Range, it's definitely an experience to behold. It's even nicer if you
buy a rug, too.
